We love the PoW! these days and at its opposite ends are two unmissable new shows.

First off, the Beardsmore Gallery hosts a new exhibition by Wolverhampton artist Jason Hicklin.

Stark against the white walls of the two-roomed space, Hicklin’s atmospheric etchings and large graphite drawings, based on walks around the coast and lakes of the British Isles and Ireland, are grouped together under the name Mull: Water-surrounded Land. Perfect pre- or post-Grafton pontification, methinks (ends June 21).

And at the other end of the PoW (perhaps via a stop-off at the Brewery, Fields Beneath or the Admiral) is the second part of Painting from the Zabludowicz Collection, which opens today (free, until August 11).

Part II features a solo presentation of work by Josh Smith and a group exhibition of works from the Collection. Albert Oehlen’s solo exhibition (which we reviewed here) will continue through Part II.

Josh Smith is a New York-based painter whose work explores notions of authorship, authenticity and originality. Smith frequently uses his own name as a visual trope running through his work, making it both an image and a signifier of his identity. This exhibition will include works by Smith made over the past six years.

And there’s also a group exhibition consisting of works by artists including Tauba Auerbach, Jessica Dickinson, Sam Falls, Alex Hubbard, Nathan Hylden, Rosy Keyser and Ned Vena. Open Thurs – Sunday 12-6pm. 176 Prince Of Wales Road.

Next: a strange missive from a reader
