Parov Stelar Band: quirky electronic jazzy doings at The Forum this weekend

Despite the recent expiration of the Bull & Gate as a music venue, Kentish Town’s live scene remains in rude health, with the mighty Forum in particular stacking up the world class acts. From today we’ll try and offer you a round-up of monthly highlights.

So what’s coming up in June? To start, the return of genre-bending Austrian electro-swinging ensemble the Parov Stelar Band this Friday and Saturday night. With cult hero Parov in the DJ booth, accompanied by brass and rhythm sections plus jazzy vocalists, both nights have a 2am licence so things have time to get suitably quirky.

Sunday is one for 80s nostalgics, with Big Country playing greatest hits and new tracks to show that they’ve still got it. Next Saturday (8th), equally long-in-the-tooth country punk rockers Meat Puppets, out of Phoenix Arizona, join Seattle grunge exponents Mudhoney for an all American gee-tar throw down.

And most of all we heart the look of the Lovebox and Red Bull Music Academy party on Friday 14th, deftly charting the development of electronic music from 70s NYC disco to Daft Punk. DP’s current chart topping collaborator Nile Rodgers headlines with Chic, and he’s also curated a monster line-up of DJs from all eras to celebrate the disco sound. Studio 54 resident Nicky Siano, Acid House hero DJ Pierre, boom boom king Derrick Carter, techno royalty Derrick May and current hot ticket Seth Troxler are among them.
