Evenings By Bike
Bread by Bike on Brecknock Road is the popular bakery and cafe we first wrote about back in 2017, but did you know they now run semi-regular “Evenings by Bike”? These comprise a rather tempting set menu of sharing plates for two as well as wines from Half Cut on York Way. The next dinner includes Smoked Artichoke Broth and Three Cornered Leek Oil, Tortellini and Burrata, Guinea Fowl, Potato Terrine and Onions, and Almond and Brown Sugar Custard Tart. It takes place on the 28th (details here). Follow @breadbybike for more.
2-for-1 vino at Kentish Town Stores
Now this we can get behind. The charming cafe, store and wine bar off Kentish Town Road is tempting locals away from the strictures of Dry January with an enticing 2-for-1 on glasses of plonk every Friday and Saturday evening (from 4pm-6pm). Basically that just means skiving off a bit early if you WFH, or hitting the bar mid-afternoon on a Saturday, after a wee browse at the Owl Bookshop. Sounds perfect. Haku Kitchin is coming to Fortess Road
We loved ice cream queens Ruby Violet when they took over 118 Fortess Road a decade ago. And it was a shame when the owners moved out last year (at least they can still be found down in Granary Square). The next occupants will be Haku Kitchin, a Japanese restaurant founded by Umesh Bhandari, who grew up Kathmandu, Nepal. Now with many years’ experience cooking in the capital, Umesh says he has created “the perfect menu”, with delicious dishes such as Salmon Grilled Sushi, Szechuan Pepper Squid, Gyoza, a “Camden” Asparagus Roll, and Haku Pumpkin Bento, with pumpkin katsu, mokie beans, red chilli, cherry tomato and sesame seeds. Sound familiar? Haku was previously located at Tai Pan Alley on Inverness Street NW1. Opening date TBC. Follow @hakukitchin
20% off Food at Patron
Also channelling the ‘early bird’ vibes this month is Fortess Road’s classic French restaurant Patron, which is offering 20% off their highly comforting food menu everyday between 5pm and 630pm. Which seems like a pretty good deal to us. Read more about their new dining room extension and latest menus here. Offer ends Jan 31st. Follow @patronlondon
Gokyuzu (and more) are here
Yes, this opened at the end of last year, but in the winter rush we passed over Kentish Town’s newest Turkish arrival. Along with pizzeria Berbere, and relocated longstanding Japanese restaurant Kami – which is looking very smart in its new home, formerly Jayne’s Florist – Green Lanes institution Gokyuzu has brightened up the immediate station area. Originating in Harringay (read our review here) it’s serves a most reliable tender chicken shish: portions are big, and the breads and salads are generous too. Follow @gokyuzu_restaurant_kentishtown
