Spence Bakery closes this weekend on Fortess Road

After six years on the street, it's a sad adieu to one of its most popular stores

Unbelievably it opened back in 2015 (read our original story here). And now friendly Fortess Road bakery Spence closes for the final time, this Saturday, 3rd April.

“We’ve had a terrific six years on this brilliant street,” say owners Liz and Katherine, “so it is with very mixed emotions that we’re waving farewell to this lovely neighbourhood.”

They maintain the closure is not Covid-related, nor is the bakery failing. “But, this last year has given us time to do some pretty heavy soul searching after what have personally been a rough couple of years, with the loss of dear family members and some very close friends.

“We’ve had the chance to really think about what we want from our lives, and redressing the balance of work and fun. After all, you only get one spin, don’t you?”

You can’t say fairer than that. There is a little good news: “Our Stoke Newington bakery and wholesale operation will be open as normal, so please know that we will never be very far away, and that Clissold Park is lovely for a stroll and a picnic this time of year.”

So, why not come and say “hello goodbye” and, of course, stock up on bread and buns one last time this weekend?

“We’d like to say a huge thank you to our customers at Tufnell Park, past and present. Your support has meant an enormous amount to us and we will miss you,” they say.

Spence Bakery closes this Saturday April 3rd. Find the Stoke Newington branch at 161 Stoke Newington Church St, Stoke Newington, London N16 0UH, open daily till 4pm
