Pinboard: Local art special, plus where is K-Town’s club – and a terrace for The Grafton?

3. Clubbing: Egg 10th birthday celebrations

Egg dancefloor

Last Friday we paid a visit to Egg, what we’d like to call Kentish Town’s very own proper nightclub. And as it’s only a 10-15 walk, we think the moniker’s justified.

Why? Well, this month sees the start of their 10 year celebrations, no mean feat in London’s current clubbing climate, and one made more impressive by the huge expansion programme currently underway at the sprawling, multi-floor venue.

A selection of well-oiled music hacks were given a sneak preview of the new dancefloors and an amazing roof terrace. We all agreed the next decade at the club is primed to be an exciting new era, before retiring to a comfy sofa in the garden, drink in hand, to watch a stream of enthusiastic new arrivals get the place jumping.

Club owner Lawrence Malice said to us that “big clubs of this size are now a rarity in London. It’s simply impossible to put them anywhere near residents these days, yet the smoking ban means an outside area is more important than ever. I chose this spot as the land is still marked out as industrial and we boast two huge outside areas. We’re certainly building for the future.”

Egg 11 May

Tomorrow night Canada’s Art Department carry on with the celebrations, while on Saturday Riva Starr and Pirupa DJ back to back for an almighty 10 hour session (if you don’t already know, Egg really gets into its stride after hours, when the sun has firmly come up).

Other highlights of the month include US house legends Felix Da Housecat and DJ Pierre next Friday, plus one-time Liverpool lad turned Kentishtowner Yousef bringing his Circus night to the club on the 24th, with a special guest set from the irrepressible Frenchman Laurent Garnier.

Time to get your rave on and help them blow out the candles.

  1. Grafton Road Sun Terrace Society

I have lived on Grafton Road for over 15 years and it fills me with joy to see The Grafton buzzing with people many of whom wear trousers just a liitle too short and facial hair. I am in favour of public use of the terrace as it will offer a marvellous place to people watch and hang out. I can see why the council object to this usage, indeed can you name another pub with a similar terrace that is open to drinkers ? The Carlton further up Grafton Road is now flats and does have a usable terrace, but then again its private not public. The Lock Tavern has a big upstairs terrace but it is “hidden” . So I can see the planners sticking to their guns. That being said I have had tangled with the planning department before and in my experience they do listen. Then again these are the folk responsible for agreeing to that beast of a building being constructed next to KT West Station.
Maybe as a compromise suggest the terrace is open for 15 weeks in the year, or only when its sunny or that it must close at 10.00.

    1. Hi neighbour, thanks for your words of support! We’re hoping our views will be taken on board by planning through the appeal process. We’ve only asked for a license for the area up until 9.30pm as we thought that might minimise any potential disturbance. Great suggestion re. only opening for a certain no of weeks per year. We’d prefer it didn’t come to that but if a further compromise is needed that’s a cracking suggestion.

  2. I completely support this as a new resident of POW road, the Grafton is an absolutely cracking pub with a fantastic atmosphere (and beers to boot). A (well-managed) terrace would add another dimension and much needed open space for the area.
