Ich Bin Kentishtowner: Tony Randon, reggae shop owner

Massive International London

What makes you unhappy?
Negativity. In all its forms.

Where do you hang out?
Local music venues, like Dingwalls. I like the old school music, and run my own night Massive Mondays at the Lockside Lounge. We play classic ska, roots and rocksteady every week. Nice.

What’s been your best experience?
I’ve been lucky with my shop. I’ve built up good clientele. I sell very specialist music, but people come from all over Europe to visit us.

What do you most dislike about your appearance?
You know what, I like my appearance.

What has your career taught you?
I started working in Camden Lock Market in ’89 as part of a youth fund-raising initiative. When that finished I carried on. I never thought I was in the right place, as my partners selling reggae in Ridley Road Market and Petticoat Lane used to do better. But they’ve all closed down now. Camden’s still got a vinyl tradition, so it’s proved the right choice after all.
