Our very own Summer Exhibition. Plus 3 awesome new southeast Asian restaurants – and the local who swam the channel

The other day we put a call out on social media, Royal Academy-style, asking artists to send us a special piece of work to feature in this shiny August issue. Our little Summer Exhibition, if you like.

And what a response! Thanks to everyone who came forward. In fact, there were too many brilliant artists to feature in just one issue – so we’ve decided to showcase the best over two months.

Take our awesome cover photo of young Felix at Camden Road’s skate park, for example, by photographer Tara Gordon. “I noticed we had the park to ourselves that day,” he says, “and it was dull so I used fill-in flash to make him pop a bit more. The idea was to get a friend in an action shot doing something he loves.”

We also feature half a dozen other creatives, from an illustrator to a textile designer, doll-maker and oil painter, discussing what inspires their work.

Elsewhere inside, we devour Southeast Asian fare at three new openings in the area, take a sneaky tour of London Zoo’s perimeter, and hear the story of the non-swimmer who bravely conquered the Channel.
