Tenner Or Less: Pho at Thanh Binh, Chalk Farm Road

Delicious Vietnamese cooking - but service should really up its game

Comforting and packed with flavour: Pho at Thanh Binh. Photo: SE
Where? Down on Chalk Farm Road near the iconic painted bridge, and equidistant from the Stables Market and Hawley Arms.

What? Pho Tom Thit (£7), a southern Vietnamese style rice-flour noodle soup with chargrilled pork and king prawns. It’s comforting and packed with flavour: we also like the fact that the spring onions, chilli, coriander and dried shallots come on the side so you can create the level of heat and spice to suit your palate.

Why? A family-run Vietnamese restaurant with the same chef since 1990, Thanh Binh has become something of an institution on a stretch that’s forever changing. And there’s generally room for walk-ins.

Don’t: forget that this is a frustratingly old-school eating experience. The rather daunting owner sits by the door, and is not entirely friendly; but try not to let that put you off.

Notes: In short, the food is delicious (there’s also a set lunch at £6), but to be a real contender in 2016, service might want to up its game, especially with the explosion of quality eating options in nearby Camden Lock and its surrounds.

Find Thanh Binh, open daily until 1030pm, at 14 Chalk Farm Road NW1

  1. The owner is so very rude at this place. Many times in the past, I have been shocked by her lack of respect towards customers, even those who are regulars. These days, I just don’t eat here as a matter of principle.
