Name a King’s Cross street after a lost nightclub

Coal Drops - Kings Cross Central

First came the article, celebrating London’s much-loved ‘lost’ nightclubs, then came our inspired day out, placing guerrilla blue plaques on what remains of the buildings today.

But what next? With the nostalgic and emotional comments still flooding in, how can we collectively turn all that momentum (10k Facebook likes and counting on the original post) into some positive action? How do we ensure the cultural significance of these hallowed places is properly honoured?

Plaques cover Well, with impeccable timing, King’s Cross have just launched a public street naming competition for 10 new roads that the redevelopment of the area is creating. The very same work that closed The Cross, Bagley’s/Canvas and The Key.

And already we’ve spotted a couple of club-themed suggestions left by readers in our comments section. So how could we not hastily set up our own campaign to make sure the voice of the rave faithful is heard? A call to arms for all those who had the time of their lives in this once-thriving nightlife district.

We urge all of you to vote now for a historic nightclub related street name. You can vote for as many as you like HERE.

Lazer Way

Some ideas? How about Bagley’s Way, proposed reader Steven Hammerton, which works with a duel historic significance, Bagley’s the nightclub taking its name from the factory of Bagley, Wild & Co, soda bottle manufacturers here 100 years earlier.

Or what about reinstating Lazer Road, the name given somewhat unofficially to the cobbled street that once ran up to The Key (pictured right).

Perhaps the large annual festival that happened on the Goods Yard site could get a nod: Cross Central Park West, anyone?

It’s up to you, but together, we can make it happen. Once we get a road, then we’ll fight for permanent blue plaques. Who’s with us?

  1. Why not write about the appallingly grim Soviet style blocks being built along goods way ? This is a truly dreadful development. It seems to me that no designer or architect had ANY hand in it. Leave the P.R to the puffers and talk about the real issues, please?
