Two Kentish Town horror stories from the Times Archive

Think our present day society is going to the dogs? Cast an eye over these two newspaper reports from the 19th century

And this is, we’re sorry to say, particularly gruesome.

December 1887, Montpelier Grove: 22 year old servant Elizabeth Fitch hears a dog bark and steps out into the road to see what the matter is. Her mistress, Mrs Osbourne, spots something against a wall. It’s – unbelievably – a baby’s head. They quickly find other parts of the poor child’s body. And in steps the local copper, who glimpses “the trunk” in a disused school on Leighton Grove.
