The folk at forthcoming Kentish Town Road opening Joe’s Southern Kitchen & Bar are clearly keen to make a good first impression.
They’ve been busy tweeting us images of their rapidly-progressing site refit, a mere fortnight since the last babaganoush boards and burgers were served at Kentish Canteen (RIP).
As you can see, the they are embarking on a completely new look and feel for the restaurant, which is set to open within weeks.
Gone are the banquettes and central bar, while the famous montage of NW5 imagery has also been ripped out, ready for what we expect to be some deeply Southern USA-stylings.
No snaps from ex-Shebeen in the basement yet, but we’re fairly sure they’ll be forthcoming. Follow Joe’s on Twitter for the latest snaps.
Meanwhile, why not recap on the surprising history of this former police station building with links to Jack the Ripper.

Very sorry to see the demise of the Canteen. Best fish & chips ever and it was always possible to find something on the menu which dovetailed with my latest diet without compromising on taste. Au revoir and thank you, Wendy! Joe’s Kitchen? Decent coffee, healthy snacks and wheelchair access would be a good start…
We are missing all our loyal customers and NW5 friends….but not missing the hassle of chefs!!
Loved Canteen so much, and loved the neighbourhood.
Joe’s Southern Kitchen will be great for you all!
