Why are boozers always born in September? Perhaps it’s because the summer is so goddamn slow. And Xmas is – well – a little too competitive.
Anyway, if the Grafton’s all-weekend bash doesn’t leave you skint and rehab-ready, another of our favourites reaches a milestone next week. And to celebrate their second birthday, the boys at the Colonel Fawcett are gearing up for no less than four – count ’em – days of partying, from 25 – 28 September.
Things kick off next Wednesday, 25 Sept, with what they’re calling the Curious Gin Experience. A bunch of Martin Millers experts will, they promise, take you through the “tumultuous and intriguing history of mother’s ruin”. Sounds Negroni-tastic to us. Meanwhile, to steady too sudden a collapse, posh canapés will be in offer to soak things up a bit. £12 per person (includes canapés and drinks).
The following evening, you can try and repair those gin-ravaged braincells with a birthday quiz night. It all sounds a bit serious too: Booze Bingo, Twister Competition, Quiz Catwalk Round and free shots and so on. Yikes. £1 entry per person (8pm-10.30pm. Maximum 6 people per team).
Our preferred evening? Why, Friday’s Supper Club (Sept 27). We attended the first ever one earlier this year – and were highly impressed with the tasting menu, all elegant modern British grub beautifully presented. Plus it’s upstairs in the underrated Victorian dining room. £45 per head.
Saturday night is – inevitably – party night. As if you haven’t had enough already. “Come and join us in what we do best here at The Colonel,” enthuses co-manager Ross. There’ll be DJs Finn Jones (Knight of Flowers, Game of Thrones), Jason Status and Barry Tidalwave until 2am, free shots and generally a good old fashioned knees-up.
And after that? It’s beans on toast for a week.
