Tank Party

Sarnie Party all weekend in Kentish Town. Plus top local lunchtime deals

Next-level sandwiches at Camden Brewery, plus decent midday meal deals in Camden and Kentish

FESTIVAL: SARNIE PARTY

We have to admit the sarnie scene in London (and, on our visit last weekend, Margate) is on fire right now. We absolutely love, for example, the incredible egg, chilli and bacon brunch focaccia bap at Dusty Knuckle Bakery near Harringay Green Lanes station: if you haven’t been, it’s well worth the 10-minute hop on the Overground from Gospel Oak.

Anyway back in Kentish Town, this weekend Wilkin Street Mews’ original craft beer joint is hosting a stellar line-up (17th to 19th May) of the UK’s hottest chefs and sandwich shops. The excitable press release from Camden Town Brewery promises “never-before-seen special sandwiches, crafted exclusively for the festival. Expect old-school English reworked classics, superbly stuffed sourdough and tantalising toasties.”

Each day there’s a different line up featuring London heavyweights Dom’s Subs, Mondo Sandos, Rogues Sandwiches, The Black Pig, Ruben’s Reubens, Leyton institution Deeney’s, and even ice cream sandwiches from Happy Endings. Also getting in on the action – and representing Margate – is Cliftonville deli Picnic. Tickets are £30/per session and includes 3 sandwiches servings and a Camden Town Beer on entry. It runs 17th to 19th May. More here.

LUNCHTIME DEALS: A ROUND-UP

The other sunny morning we strutted the length of thoroughfare from Mornington Crescent up Chalk Farm Road and then Kentish Town Road to see what food offers were being flagged up for those – like us – on a strict budget.

The good news is there really are quite a few midday bargains to be had. Starting on the lower stretch of Camden High Street, Chinese restaurant JinLi (pictured above, bottom right) offers a choice of six different 3-course meals for £12.80 (12-4pm), such as chicken fried noodles, vegetarian spring rolls and a fruit salad.

Just further up the high street, popular Greek joint Yamas (pictured above, bottom left) goes better still with 5 courses for eat-in £11.40 (12-3pm), including pork gyros, spinach pie, tzatziki, chicken skewers and more. Across the way, the Sushi Co offers 2 bao buns for a competitive £6.99.

Up in Kentish Town, the best daytime deals seem to be the pizza restaurants: Berbere’s lunch menu is £10 (above, top right) for a choice of six pizzas (smoked margherita, anyone?) and a soft drink, while Never For Ever goes for a booze hook on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with two-cocktails-for-£12.

Much-loved nearby trattoria Rossella (above, top left) has arguably the best offer of all: any pizza, pasta or salad for £9 at lunch.  And finally for burger fans, The Hut By The Heath is offering its Saucy Chicken fillet in a brioche bun with slaw and salad for £5.50. Grab a couple and climb Parliament Hill with a nice chilled bottle of vino for a lazy weekend lunch.
