Tenner Or Less: Doro spinach tibs, Lalibela

It's been a Fortess Road staple for 25 years. Here's one reason to go

Where? Bang in the middle of Fortess Road’s rejuvenated stretch, and opposite another longstanding neighbourhood place, Blue Moon Thai café.

What? Tasty chicken fried with spinach, fresh tomatoes and seasonal vegetables, for £8.95. Yes, there are more adventurous dishes on the menu, but we love this warming and comforting classic. Mop it up with spongy injera bread.

Why? On an ever-changing road, this quirky two-floor Ethiopian restaurant – with booths, rugs, mis-matched wooden furniture and so on – is like a familiar hug. Or more accurately, a meal in someone’s house. Staff are friendly, smiley and will always help with the menu too. Lalibela has been here for 25 years, and let’s hope it stays that way.

Don’t: Be in too much of a hurry. On our last visit, on a wintry Tuesday evening, despite being only a handful of people upstairs, we had a very long wait for the mains.

Notes: It’s licensed, but they’re everso laidback if you happen to BYO. Always worth knowing.
