Journey to the bottom of the Regent’s Canal

This weekend there's a once in a generation opportunity to venture into the depths of Kentish Town Lock on foot

Ever fancied a wander on the ocean floor? Or, erm, the NW1 equivalent, the canal basin?

Course you have. Well, this weekend you’re in luck as the Canal & River Trust are replacing the lock gates at Kentish Town Lock, apparently one of the busiest ones on the entire network.

And to do that they’ve had to drain the canal, which involved two decades-worth of dirty old Camden rubbish being hauled out on Monday.

Anyway, the upshot is that visitors can take a rare peek, over two days, at “what lurks beneath” with the opportunity to venture down into the depths of the lock and see what it looks like from a totally new angle. Instagold!

You can’t just climb down though, blindly: don’t be silly. Knowledgeable maintenance crew types and on-hand lock historians will be personally giving punters a guided tour of the 200-year-old site.

The Lock Stoppage Weekend is free and takes place on 23rd and 24th January, 10am – 4pm, Kentish Town Lock. Access is via Chalk Farm Road or Kentish Town Road NW1 8AF. More info here
