In last year’s 37 Things You Never Knew About Tufnell Park, No.18 was the fact that fans still flock to 23 Carleton Road, where Hollywood superstar Simon Pegg’s breakthrough sitcom Spaced was set (better known as Meteor Street).
And now uber-fans can go one better than embarking on pilgrimages to N7 to shoot grinning selfies and carve adoring graffiti. They can actually live in the flat itself.
Alas, the trouble is, reports a local property site, it’s a whopping “500 per cent more expensive than in 1999”.
Ouch. Now marketed as a “spacious, refurbished two double bedroom flat in a Grade II-listed period building, it has “access” to a rear patio garden, its own external entrance, a kitchen/diner, a utility room and a large shower room. Sounds lovely! But at a mahoosive 2K a month you’d better have a few bob spare.
Fans will recall that the home played a memorable role in Spaced, with protagonists Pegg and Jessica Stevenson moving in there together. At one point in the series, the script reveals that the rent is just £90 a week; now it’s being rented at £460 per week, over five times that price.
Not that surprising, of course, fifteen years later. But it should still give pause for thought. And, you never know, if you do bag the keys, maybe it’ll inspire you to create your own ground-breaking sitcom…
