We never thought we’d say it, but we’ve grown quite fond of the benches outside The Grafton. Around 6pm, is there a better people-watching spot in NW5? Locals, kids, canoodling couples, dogs off leads, students, bearded meeja types, the fashion brigade from Spring Studios and Rankin…all life is truly here.
But if that’s too hectic after a hard day’s slog, soon there’ll be a quieter outdoor area to sup your Hell’s. Upstairs, adjoining the new dining room and cocktail bar, a roof terrace will open shortly, “thanks to the backing of our wonderful community,” says co-owner Susie. In fact, following our article a year ago, “over 1500 people signed the petition in support,” she says.
They have fought hard to ensure the design was sympathetic “because we are truly in love with this place,” Susie continues. “Since taking on this dilapidated old boozer in 2012, we’ve done everything we can to restore the beautiful Victorian building to its former glory, making the most of its original features whilst incorporating contemporary touches that complement and enhance.”
Conscious that an outdoor area might be a concern for our neighbours, the roof terrace has been designed to incorporate “acoustic glazing and dense planting around the perimeter” to limit potential noise.
So when is the grand opening? Well, the scaffold goes up today and work commencing early next week, so the plan is the end of May.
“This should truly be a summer to remember,” reckons Susie. “Lazy brunches, prosecco on tap, barbecues, spritzes, pop up outdoor bars, alfresco film nights and long boozy afternoons in the sun.”
