The best thing about working for a community organisation like North London Cares is getting to know some of the people whom you could so easily march past without a second thought.
One such person is Walter – gardener, raconteur, carer for his wife, personality.
Walter hasn’t had it easy. He arrived from Sri Lanka in an unfamiliar place as a young man and had to build up a life, more than once as it transpires, on charm, humour and deep inner strength.
Walter doesn’t fuss or fret. Rather, within the madness of a modern metropolis, he exudes an easy calm.
He’s also priceless company, and he can be gut-grabbingly funny. But while he loves entertaining others, he doesn’t need to be noticed. There’s wisdom in that.
In his Hidden Heroes film, the fourth in our series of six, Walter touches on the tough times of a life lived fully. And he recalls the moments of happiness that give his spirit a lifting quality.
We hope you enjoy the film. And if you do, please share it or come along to a North London Cares event soon, where you can meet Walter, Peggy & Inez, black cab driver Johnny, and Elvis impersonator Dave in person.
Alex Smith is founder of North London Cares, a volunteer network matching young professionals to older neighbours in need of help, social connection or companionship. Find out more about them here.

Wonderful to hear Walter’s story and his dedication to his wife, plants and flowers is most touching.
