Judith Dimant is the producer of award-winning theatre company Complicite, who have been based in Anglers Lane for 13 years. She went to Camden School for Girls from 1974 to 1981. Her dad and sister owned the framing and poster shop on Kentish Town Road for 25 years until 1999 (now the Wine Cellar Portuguese deli).

2013 is Complicite’s 30th anniversary and they are marking it with their first show for families – Lionboy – which opens tonight at the Unicorn Theatre in London Bridge. It runs to 21 July and is the story of a young boy on a mission to rescue his parents with the help of a floating circus and its pride of performing lions.

Where do you hang out?
Kentish Canteen. And I simply love Mario’s Café too.

Where would you most like to live?
Torriano Cottages look nice, or Lissenden Mansions.

What is your favourite sound?
I always remember the local rag and bone man, with his barrow and dog, making such a distinctive cry as he came up Anglers Lane.

What is your earliest K-Town memory?
I remember when Marks & Spencer (yes, there really was one here), became the Kickers shoe outlet for a short while, complete with roller-skating sales assistants.

What is your most unappealing habit?
Breaking off the split ends of my hair.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Having my toenails painted at Top to Toe salon on Kentish Town Road. (I love that place).

What do you most dislike about your appearance?
You’ve got to be joking? I’ve just turned 50. Everything is heading southwards.

What has your career taught you?
If you don’t ask, you don’t get. Plus I’m glad I’m not starting out now.

What’s your best experience? And your worst?
School. It’s the same thing for both actually. I went to Camden School for Girls if that goes any way towards explaining my double answer!

What is your favourite dish?
Simple. Tomatoes on toast at Kentish Canteen. Sweet and sharp, and with great bread too.

For more info and tickets to Lionboy, see the Unicorn Theatre website.

  1. Actually the frame shop, Atelier, was located on the corner of KT Road and Angler’s Lane, where Morgans the stationers is now and not the Wine Cellar.
