Pinboard: a date set for Kentish Town Carnival – and other spring festivals

3. Another new festival for Kentish Town – this weekend

It’s that time of the year again when weekend fairs wave fiercely at us for attention. First off is the Fleet Festival, taking place this Saturday and Sunday, a “free arts, music and family events celebrating the undercurrent of creativity in Kentish Town.”

Sounds good, although there’s a bit of religion going on too (which may or may not be your thing) as it’s about “churches in Camden joining together to celebrate the Pentecost weekend with the local community”.

Either way, there’s lots to get excited about, from film screenings to live music and DJs at venues including Map Cafe, Owl, Assembly House and the Free Space Gallery. A mural will be painted at The Grafton at around 3pm, and there’s also a “knitting tea party” and dance workshops at Expressions studio. Check out the full programme at the 18 participating venues here here.

Prefer something a little more low-key? Try the Torriano Craft & Handmade Fair on Sunday 19th May (11am – 3pm at Torriano Infant School). It’s the third edition of the pop-up market selling affordable and original creations. There’ll also be Ruby Violet ice cream, origami, pineapple earings, and a Lunar Cycles Clinic. 20+ stalls, 50p entrance, children free.

  1. So now they start asking for 10k to put it on?

Why so much money? I’m sure that other events (e.g. the Alma Street Fair) don’t cost anything like that.

  2. I can rememebr one in Talacre in 1973.

They currently have £145 of the £10,000. Surely it would be better to have had most of the funding in place a lot sooner. To put on a disastrous event would do more harm than good. It would be better to start planning for 2014 and avoid a fiasco in 2013.
