Pinboard: a date set for Kentish Town Carnival – and other spring festivals

1. K-Town Carnival Date – now set for Sunday June 16

Kentish Town CarnivalThere’s been much talk recently about the cultural health of the area. So now, let’s celebrate the fact that exactly one month today is the first ever Kentish Town Carnival, which takes place on Talacre Road and Gardens on June 16, from 11am till 7.30pm.

A free cultural arts festival, it’s being curated by the Many Cultures One Community posse as a public forum for local artists, musicians, film makers, poets and local businesses.

“The event is hoping to attracts hundreds of people from across Kentish Town,” says organiser Sara Newman. “This first 2013 festival will feature a parade with wild and wonderful floats, samba bands and The Fun Art Bus. Then there’s a street party in Talacre Gardens, mini film festival, a troupe performance in the gardens, and spoken word in the marquee…”

CarnivalAnd that’s not all. Bring an instrument to play in Radio 3 DJ Max Reinhardt’s Kentish Town Instant Orchestra or bring your five fave tracks (on CD or IPOD) for Max’s ‘Tracks of Your Lives’ DJ set. Elsewhere there’s a swing dance workshop, martial arts demos as well as bands, art and crafts workshops for children. Plus a community market with local vendors selling nice food and artisan bits and bobs.

Phew. They need your help though. “We’re currently recruiting stewards,” says Sara. “You get free lunch and a great view of the whole parade, plus you’d be doing a really good turn for your whole community.”

They also need to raise £10,000 to make the event happen. So to find out more info or if you can donate to help make the carnival happen, head here.

Fan of the city farm? Head to the next Many Cultures event on Friday (May 24) from 7-9pm @ Torriano Meeting House, where a panel of speakers will include David Powell and Chris Heath amongst others, music from Erik Rutterford.

Next: An Amy Winehouse exhibition in Camden Town

  1. So now they start asking for 10k to put it on?

Why so much money? I’m sure that other events (e.g. the Alma Street Fair) don’t cost anything like that.

  2. I can rememebr one in Talacre in 1973.

They currently have £145 of the £10,000. Surely it would be better to have had most of the funding in place a lot sooner. To put on a disastrous event would do more harm than good. It would be better to start planning for 2014 and avoid a fiasco in 2013.
