Competition winner: Last month’s front cover artwork by Ollie Sylvester

Last month we decided to throw a little competition to showcase the best local talent on the cover of our second print issue.

So we asked you to create an artwork or photograph that referenced the area but which in some way, however small or big, used physical pieces of the first Kentishtowner print edition. Clever, huh? Not to mention recycling at its most efficient. So thanks to everyone who responded.

We had some interesting entries, from the odd to the downright bizarre, but the winner is born and bred K-Town artist Ollie Sylvester, whose work has been exhibited everywhere from our very own Flaxon Ptooch to as far afield as China. His entry depicts a “wonky character wiping his nose,” says Ollie, “while it’s snowing Kentishtowner letters in background.” Fair enough.

Sylvester used to be a graffiti artist, but says he’s transported his art onto canvas and evolved his original technique and style. “I’m inspired by Lego, comics, old skool graff, acid house, the darker side of urban life, London, pubs, hang-overs and come-downs,” he says.

Born in 1972, and diagnosed with mild dyslexia early on, he found himself more interested in doodling than his school work. From the early 80’s he was involved in the London graffiti scene before an accident in 1994 almost severed his right arm and resulted in him painting with his left hand: this is when his straight-lined cross-hatch style started to evolve on canvas.

Our print edition features a local artist on the cover every month. Do you want us to consider your work? Email info@kentishtowner.co.uk. We’re currently looking at the June and July issues so bear that in mind when submitting. Thanks!
