Kentish Street? Go on, name a brand new road in King’s Cross

Kings Cross Map

Who has a soft spot for King’s Cross? Like Kentish Town it’s always had a mixed rep, and the two places are joined in conjugal bliss by a fifteen minute romp along the Regent’s Canal. And whilst the infamous nightclubs are long gone, the area around Granary Square, with its glossy new Caravan restaurant and Central Saint Martins college, not to mention Shrimpy’s, KERB streetfood market, St Pancras and King’s Place, make it as lively a destination as any in the locale.

And the people behind the ongoing 67 acre King’s Cross development have launched a competition for readers to name one of ten new streets. As you will have seen if you’ve swung by recently, there are already a handful of new thoroughfares, including King’s Boulevard, Handyside Street, Stable Street, Beaconsfield Street and Tapper Walk.

But so far, the monikers chosen have had a clear link to the area, whether past, present or future. And now they want help with the rest; it’s quite a nice idea to think that one day you might be walking down a street you’ve actually named.

So are you feeling inspired, punks? How about Kentish Street? Pineapple Crescent? Camden City Drive? (Yuck!) Or Tufnell Park Road? (Oops, that one’s been taken).

Kids

You’ve got until May 31 to dream up your fave street name; the announcement on the shortlisting process will apparently take place later this year.

Submit as many suggestions as you wish by completing an online form, or by visiting the King’s Cross Visitor Centre or one of Camden’s public libraries and completing a form.

Good luck an’ all that.

Words: Stephen Emms

The competition closes on May 31. More info here.
