Two More Boutique Coffee ‘n Cake Openings

Another new artisan wotsit opened in KT this week and we’re more than happy to have it. The Fields Beneath, named after Gillian Tindall’s inspirational history of Kentish Town, offers rich coffee from Square Mile along with gorgeous golden organic milk from Jess’ Ladies. Tempting cakes are baked by owner Gavin’s mum – and her mum too. Wowsers.

They’ve been making plenty of friends already this week, dishing out free coffees to eager locals and K-Town workers streaming out of the neighbouring Overground station. Soon to come will be breakfasts and simple lunches, along with the all-important alcohol license in time for some Christmas cheer.

Aside from the consumables, a mini library (with proper cards and stamps in the books) will rent out a local history book or two and the walls are to feature art supplied by the nearby Zabludowicz Collection.

It’s great to see this bright and airy under-arch space finally open for business. You’ll find it at 52a Prince of Wales road, next to KTW Overground and Wilkin Street Mews.

Meanwhile, the Arancini Brothers-led revival of the dreary lower reaches of KT Road continues apace, with news that Guanabana restaurant have purchased the café next door and are busy turning it into a ‘dessert deli’ featuring sweet Caribbean and Latin treats, plus yet more good fresh coffee.

The building was until recently a rather notorious social centre where the popular Somali drug khat was consumed and a drive-by shooting took place some years ago. We pressed our noses to the window and were hastily invited in for a sneaky look round.

A doorway from the pretty back garden area of Guanabana has already been knocked through and the deceptively cavernous back space (think the restaurant’s garden area next door, under a conservatory) is full of natural light.

The refit plans look exciting. Already the oppressive grills on the windows have been removed and shop front woodwork exposed, with cool light fixtures in place. Opening in the next month or so, they plan to run cookery classes and other social events. Fantastico.

If all goes well this could help finally drag this last section of lost arcade between Camden and Kentish onto the New KT map. Just don’t ask for a khat side salad.

  1. Went to The Fields Beneath last Thursday and this is definitely a place I’d like to visit more often. I sleepily and shyly wandered in that dark morning and got a latte. Usually I just notice the coffee itself but in this case the milk was uncommonly fine. I’m not one of those knowledgeable people with educated tastebuds or anything, but I really noticed the difference and felt it remarkable.

(Also eyed the egg and bacon tartlets lined up on the counter, they all looked so boss!)
