Sponsored Video: Samsung’s Buenos Aires… or Rio’s Kentish Town?

In a rare moment of downtime in Kentishtowner HQ, we’ve been chuckling at the ad for Samsung’s new motion and voice controlled TV. And, dear God, the age of gesticulation control is now upon us.

Yes, it’s the usual scenario of sexy girl wows amorous young men – plenty of them – but it’s executed with a panache that belies the huge budget (supermodel, star creative director, the works). Still, the fact that it’s been viewed 7.5 million times on YouTube in less than a fortnight probably justifies the team jolly to shoot it in Buenos Aires.

So the premise? Said sexy lady’s seemingly enthusiastic hand motions beckon a whole apartment/office block of deluded Romeos who’ve been busy ogling her from across the road. But what, we wondered, would be the Kentish Town equivalent? The staff at Tanning Temple trying to tune their new Samsung to the Euro2012 and inadvertently attracting twenty men from Rio’s Naturist Health Spa across the road? Chortle.

So whilst marvelling that it’s now possible to wave at the telly and silence Ant & Dec mid excitable flow (and wondering what happens if you shout at Simon Cowell to ‘shut up’?), we can also explore the possibilities for gesture-based comedy in everyday life. And the conclusion is that it’s a mighty rich vein.

As we hurtle towards Judgement Day for remote controls, computer keyboards and phones with buttons, there’s going to be plenty of waving about. How that changes the adverts of the next decade – or the cross High Street sexual chemistry – is anyone’s guess, but you can bet Samsung’s current viral effort will look quaint alarmingly quickly. Prepare to wave and shout at your screen which – let’s face it – we’re all already quite good at.

There’s ‘behind the scenes’ footage from the video shoot and more if you ‘like’ the official Facebook page too.
