Bench Tales: The Postmen’s bench, Kentish Town Delivery Office

‘In Memory Of Postman Edward “Teddy” Hutton, Friend and Colleague Died May 2005’
and ‘In Memory Of Postman Steve Abbott Rest in Peace’

Russell Burke, (Colleague, 49): ‘They were both workmates. The smaller plaque relates to a young lad called Steve Abbott, who came here from another office but sadly died from a brain tumour in his twenties. The other man was Teddy Hutton who worked here 38 years (25 of those with me), starting off as a telegram boy when he was a teenager. He didn’t know anything else.

‘In 2003 he took early retirement at the age of 55, but enjoyed the craic so much he’d still meet us all in the pub after work. He was well-known throughout Kentish Town, a right character always in his cheese-cutter cap, and a practical joker and impressionist too: he could imitate anyone, whether they were off the telly or even that Scottish fella who played James Bond.’
