Step behind new critics’ favourite the Kentish Canteen into Leverton Place and you’re transported into a faded world of Dolly Mixture-coloured cottages and cutesy terraces. Nice, if you can afford it.
Yet on the corner of leafy Leverton Street lurks The Pineapple, a real Victorian pub with a mixed crowd and many a nook and cranny to hide from the winter storms, perhaps with a glass of red.
Dark-panelled, cosy, with lots of ales (as well as sunday vintage fairs and Thursday cheese nights), there’s a conservatory and tiny walled garden too. Visit before you check out the award-winning Southampton, a 10 minute walk away.
