After the closure of long-standing Camden LGBT venue The Black Cap, we exclusively revealed back in June that a new gay bar was about to open down the road.
And so it did: Bloc Bar flung its doors wide at the end of July, and its pedigree is indisputable, coming from the team behind wildly popular east London gay bar East Bloc.
Occupying that funny old space that was once Record Club, and more recently Vice-owned bar The Stillery, it’s a two-floored, industrial-minimal space with a daily diet of DJ nights, burlesque, cabaret and parties. The music? Well, it’s definitely ticking pop, R&B, commercial house and club anthems boxes.
But every Sunday there’s something pretty special. The Bloc Sessions, say the owners, is “our tribute to the much missed Black Cap with stars from across its 50-year life joining us a for a knees-up.”
This weekend they’re joined by the “insanely talented Danni Dee for a full show, with the lovely Lilly Snatch Dragon on hand to help do a few cheeky numbers. Kicking off the event as always will be Vanity Vôn Glow.”
Sounds fun. Oh, and in other news, the venue hears tonight if it’s to get a 3am license, which the owners say is essential to programme all the cabaret performers that were once regulars at the Black Cap. Good luck to ’em. We’ll keep you posted on the outcome.
