FOOD: Camden Night Markets
From tonight, the atmospheric evening weekly street-fests are back every Thursday until September 3rd (open until 10pm). Surely the best way to see the atmospheric cobbled spaces sans tourists, day-trippers and weekenders, the idea is that they’re themed so the music, food and entertainment all work symbiotically. Expect alfresco cocktail bars, dozens of quality global food stalls, contemporary street art, world music, reggae and lots of carnival vibes probably not dissimilar to those at the recent LockLive festival. More info here.
Outdoor cinephiles will also be thrilled that Backyard Cinema kicks off this week too in cobbled Camden Lock Place (every Wed/Thurs & Fri nights for six weeks) showcasing classic movies like Pretty Woman, The Blues Brothers and the new Mad Max. So it all sounds like a pretty good night out – as long as it’s not too nippy. Cardigans at the ready, methinks. More info.
PERFORMANCE: 10th anniversary of Camden Fringe
This year is the biggest line-up of productions ever, all priced between £5 and £15. The idea, as ever, is to browse what’s on and take a chance on a show or company you’ve never heard of – the spirit of the fringe is all about daring adventure and discovery, for audiences and performers alike. Runs at dozens of venues across the borough and beyond until 30th August. Tickets and info here.
ART: Utopia at the Roundhouse
Award-winning filmmaker, writer and artist Penny Woolcock takes over the main space with a major new installation in collaboration with Block9, the designers famous for creating the extravagant fantasy worlds of Glastonbury’s after-hours stages. Utopia is a series of walk-though environments peppered with narrative soundscapes that will reverberate with Londoners’ stories. Runs 4th – 23rd August, with Live Lates every Thursday night for the duration featuring Akala, Owen Jones and Charlotte Church. Tickets (£10 or Pay What You Want Tuesdays) here.
