A Tenner Or Less: #5, Egyptian food pot, Koshari Street

Hungry? A bit skint? This one comes in at less than a fiver. And it will really fill you up too

Koshari Street
Healthy and incredibly filling for less than a fiver: Koshari Street
Where? The old Stables Market, once lined with rubbish noodle bars, now boasts some smart new outlets.

What? This Egyptian street food staple layers all manner of rice, macaroni, brown lentils, vermicelli pasta, tomato sauce, chickpeas and herbs with really tasty bits of crispy caramelised onion. Plus a fair share of doqqa, which is basically spice and nuts ground down into a sprinkle. In all, it’s surprisingly delicious. And it’s just £4.50.

Why? They reckon it’s the only stall of its kind in London. Apart from one other in Covent Garden, that is.

Notes: There are three sizes, and the one for £6.50 is surely only for the beefiest of workmen. The £4.50 option is packed with more than enough carbs to power desk jockeys through the day. And only 400 calories too.

Don’t: Eat there every day; they only do one dish. But it’s a healthy treat now and again.
