What’s going on with Andy’s Greek Taverna then?

Emma Bull on a sliver of good news for the Camden Town dining institution

Well, the hope is that the much-loved Camden institution – which is due to celebrate its 50th birthday in 2017 – looks set to stay in place for at least a further year or more. This latest reprieve comes after a load of confused notice periods following the restaurant’s lease expiry, the building’s redevelopment plans and new freehold owners. Bejeesus.

Up until late 2014, it seemed near-certain that Andy’s would close in January. And after that, it seemed highly likely that it would shut in the spring.

The redevelopment plan to install luxury flats above will retain scope for a restaurant below. However, it is likely that current Andy’s owner, Petros Ochtaras, will, of course, be priced out of such an opportunity.

Established in 1967, Andy’s has done pretty darn well to stay popular amidst the recent decline of other Greek eateries such as Daphne’s. And being handily situated just off the beaten track of Camden High Street, and equidistant between two decent boozers (Camden Head and Brewdog, since you ask), the joint is more often than not fully booked at weekends.

So although the future of the taverna remains uncertain, it’s certainly enjoying an increasing number of lives – more typically bestowed only upon cats.

While you still can, then, we encourage you to indulge in a summer platter or two, washed down by a cold glass of Cypriot wine in the resplendent white courtyard amid the garden blooms.

Need help with the menu? Allow charming Petros to order for you and share everything in the middle like a big Greek family meal. Classic salads, grilled halloumi and lamb kleftiko will tide you over till a taste of baklava with Greek roast espresso at the end. Burp. And it goes without saying that you finish off the always leisurely proceedings with a tot of Sambuca.

Only one word need then be uttered (and no, it’s not “redevelopment”): “Opa!”

Find Andy’s Taverna at 81-81A Bayham St, London NW1. Open daily till 11pm. Lots of good value set menus both at lunch and dinner (from £6.95)
