No, not that one, silly. That’s still a long way off (but we’ll keep you posted on all developments, don’t worry).
Today’s little tale is about imaginative rave boozer, the Abbey Tavern, who have just unveiled Picturebox, London’s “smallest rooftop cinema”, which is showing classic and cult films until the end of September.
“After I mentioned the indie cinema opening across the road,” says manager Simon Pipola, “Ella here suggested having a film night. We got the licence quite easily, and while looking through the selection, everyone grew more and more enthused. So we all choose categories: Jim Carrey, Coen Brothers, Studio Ghibli (mine). The rooftop terrace now looks amazing, and we plan to hold as many events up there as possible, be they film, theatre, comedy or workshops.”
But for now, movies. And the cinema is indeed teeny-tiny: it holds ten people – with room for a few more for private screenings – and will run every Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Tickets cost just £5, which also gets punters a “Picturebox Drink” from the sponsors (Aperol, Camden Town Brewery, Lazy Jacks and Brothers Cider are all supporting different nights of the week).
It would, we reckon, be fairly easy to book the whole thing to catch a movie much-loved by you and your friends or family. Upcoming flicks? Bridesmaids, the Usual Suspects, Truman Show, Big Lebowski and LA Confidential. And many more, of course.
We haven’t caught a whole movie yet, but did poke our heads in on Tuesday after the open mic finished downstairs (did anyone catch the amazing final act, incidentally?) It’s very cute. And a great idea.
The Abbey are not ones to rest on their laurels, either. Also on the menu later this month is a three-day lobstertastic Cornish food and ale festival, running throughout the bank holiday weekend.
