“Kenny is an old-skool Kentishtowner trying to keep up with current changes and trends in the area,” says artist Ollie Sylvester, with a laugh, about the new character he has created to document modern-day life in NW5.
“He’s a little bit crazy but harmless as are many old-skool locals. And he keeps on finding himself outside closed or converted pubs he used to drink at, talking into his pint (and imaginary friend), Lagerfeld.”
Okaaay. Readers may remember that Sylvester, a born and bred local himself, also designed our second ever print issue front cover, which depicted – in his own words – a “wonky character wiping his nose.”
Formerly a graffiti artist, he transported his art onto canvas to evolve his original technique and style. “I’m inspired by Lego, comics, acid house, the darker side of urban life, pubs, hang-overs and come-downs,” he says.
Which gives you a hint, perhaps, of what we can expect in the next instalment of Kentish Town Kenny.
