159: individual shops will thrive, settled in an open plan layout to encourage collaboration

Over the last five years Collective (the creative arm of Camden Town Unlimited) have done an admirable job filling boarded-up shops with imaginative pop-ups; in addition they’ve reinvented deserted buildings as “hubs”, where visionary young artists, designers and start-ups can operate rent-free.

The latest venture is probably their most ambitious opening yet. Collective 159 – a stroll away from the hubs (which operate in the old factory also home to the DRAF gallery) – is set to house a market of what they are calling “London’s most innovative creative retailers”.

159 has been transformed by Build is Everything, a design team renowned for their use of sustainable materials. “It will offer creative individuals and businesses the opportunity to showcase their ideas and products on Camden High Street,” says Collective founder Simon Pitkeathley. “Inside individual shops will thrive, settled in an open plan layout that will encourage collaboration and incubate enterprise.”

Tempted? Well, from today, they’re looking for applications to run permanent market stalls from February 2014 until October 2014. The interior will be comprised of 10 outlets which vary in size from 200-600 sq.ft each; and there’ll be a deposit, and a monthly fee, for all stallholders. The deadline for applications is 20th January.
