Kentishtowner launches new sister title Below the River

Calling all your mates south of the river! Hot on the heels of the Kentishtowner being shortlisted for Best Digital Service at the 2013 Newspaper Awards, today we’re very excited to launch our brand new sister title, Below the River.

Edited by South London born and bred broadsheet journalist Kate Burt, most recently commissioning editor of The Independent Magazine, the site will focus on the arts, lifestyle, food and people, roughly following the curve of the Thames “from Stockwell to Deptford.”

Set to publish six days a week, you can expect all our usual KT faves – Why It Matters, Wednesday Picture, Free Weekend, Pinboard – as well as the Ich Bin Q&A, rechristened as Southsayer.

She’s south London born and bred: Kate Burt
“I love the phrase Below the River,” says Kate. “It conjures up a sense of the oldest parts of South London. Broadly speaking, the areas between Stockwell and Deptford are at the heart of what we do – and also where I live and go out. But just like the Kentishtowner I love the capital as a whole and am not bound too rigidly by geography.”

Below the River has grown out of a very long friendship between Kate and Kentishtowner founder Stephen Emms. In fact, it was while commuting on what they call the “magic” train – the 20 minute hop from Kentish Town to Loughborough Junction – to hang out in their respective postcodes (or share dog-sitting duties for their Jack Russells) that they came up with the concept. “And once we had the idea of championing my side of the city,” says Kate, “we – well, okay I – couldn’t let it go.”

And she’s nothing if not strong-willed.

So what are you waiting for? Learn more about our brilliant metropolis by following Below the River; and whilst you’re at it, tell friends and family, especially those southside, to check it out too.
