The story behind Coldplay’s legendary performance kicks off our series of classic gigs at the Bull & Gate, which, as we were the first to report last week, is set to close its live venue on May 4. Over the next few months we’ll celebrate its best bits.
Coldplay played a five song set at the Fierce Panda night in April 1999, awash with music industry luminaries, which resulted in them being signed. “We were very new to the world,” says Chris Martin, replete with big barnet in pictures of the band’s performance. “My outfit was one of innocence.”
And don’t miss Simon Williams (Fierce Panda Records), who comments that the Bull & Gate is the absolute “definition of the toilet circuit,” before adding that he went in there one afternoon during rehearsal, and it smelt “like a gorilla’s cage.”
