Arif Hussain was born and lives in Camden, ‘extremely close’ to Haverstock School, where he’s studying A-levels. He started his cosmetic business, ‘Bubble and Squeak’, selling to teachers when he was 13, and now has a range of products online and at Camden Market. All his cosmetics are handmade with ‘as many organic and fairtrade ingredients’ as he can source. He will appear in a new reality show called Camden Unlocked, and has joined the Labour party, inspired by past student Ed Miliband. He has also recently volunteered to become a peer mentor giving support and advice to year 7 kids – as well as teaching them how to make soap, of course.
When were you happiest?
Going to Northumberland with a group of people I never knew and becoming really close friends with them, on something called ‘The Challenge’.
Where would you like to live?
I think near Primrose Hill or Regents Park.
What is your favourite sound or smell?
I quite like the smell of Chinese stir fry and waffles in Camden Lock.
What is your greatest life achievement?
I’m too young to say, however for now, starting a cosmetic business at the age of thirteen is probably my biggest achievement.
Always be planned and organised before doing something.
What is your earliest memory?
I once got in trouble in Gospel Oak nursery for putting mud and water in a toy teapot.
What makes you unhappy?
Winter and its cold temperatures, short days and bleakness, makes me realise why animals hibernate.
What simple thing would improve your quality of life?
365 days of summer and triple A in A levels.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Watching too many horror films.
Anywhere in Camden.
What’s your worst experience in NW5?
I can’t remember my age, but being chased by a crazed dog luckily I didn’t get bitten.
Tell us a secret.
My secret is, I have no secrets.
What has your career taught you?
I don’t have a proper career yet, so we will have to wait and see.
What is your favourite dish and why?
I love desserts so probably Marine Ices sorbets, why because of the sourness and sweetness of berries or lemons.
What was your worst gig and why?
I have sadly never been to a gig. I had the chance to go last year but was forced to revise for a geography exam.
